The Rector writes:
St
Nicholas’ Church has served the Parish of Charlwood well for over nine
hundred years. We hope that the
church will continue to flourish for many more years to come but, as we
know only too well, our beautiful building lacks the facilities that people
have come to expect. Unless we can
provide these, St Nicholas’ Church would be bound to decline as people
would travel to other churches outside the village, much as they do now to
meet many of their other needs.
We want
to maintain St Nicholas’ Church for future generations but to do so we do
need the facilities necessary for a living and active church. Thes we see as being a toilet, a kitchen
and a small meeting room which would be used for:
o
A
crèche
o
A
Sunday School
o
Church
Council meetings and Church Committees
o
Bible
Study Groups
o
Magazine
printing and collation
o
Pram
Service
o
Choir
practice
o
Children’s
singing clubs
o
Lent
Groups
o

We have
been very encouraged by the support which people have shown to our project
and by the granting of planning and other necessary permissions.
Due to
the very high standards necessary for any addition to our ancient church,
the cost of the extensions to provide the new facilities is calculated to
be £325,000. This will not be an
easy target to reach but we have been encouraged by the fact that, even
before the launch of the appeal, £125,000 had already been given or
pledged. All we have to do now is
to raise the rest!
By the
end of March 2007, the Appeal Fund had reached £225,000 – 70% of the
target.
